FAQs About ACCA And Oxford Brookes MBA

Why should I complete this MBA rather than another leading MBA?

The MBA is awarded by Oxford Brookes University and is designed specifically for ACCA members, so it does not require unnecessary repetition of accounting, finance and strategic management elements which are already covered in your professional qualification. Instead, you will further develop your existing knowledge and establish new skills. As a result you can complete the programme in 21 months - as opposed to 30 months which is the average period of time taken to complete an MBA.

The MBA is also flexible in that it allows you to study almost anywhere in the world and supports you through regular online seminars and tutor support. Our programme also has a strong international element - with students from 60 countries, and a choice of exam centres worldwide. Moreover, the programme is focused on the application of theory, so you can develop senior management skills and apply what you are learning while you are studying. The programme is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA) - a demonstration of the quality and recognition of the programme.

Isn't there a high drop-out rate for distance learning MBAs?

This is true of many other distance learning MBA programmes but this has not been students' experience on the Oxford Brookes MBA. The retention rate is exceptional for this MBA programme. We believe that this is due to three key factors: students are given a very clear schedule of study and they know exactly what they have to do by when, so they can plan their time. Students also communicate with each other and have the opportunity to meet through the Virtual Campus so they feel part of a well motivated student network. And finally, excellent tutor support is provided.

How much time per week would I need to allocate to studying?

As a guide you should be prepared to devote around 12-15 hours per week to studying. This will, of course, vary for individuals depending on their aptitudes and interests, and at different stages of the programme.

What would happen if I started the programme and then had to move to an office in another country?

The built-in flexibility of the programme will cover this eventuality. If you can plug-in your PC, you can study. In addition, with exam centres around the world, there is no reason why such a move should interrupt you from your studies or from sitting exams.

Aren't MBAs all about theory - what relevance will it have to real business practice?

You will be looking at the latest and most relevant management theories but you should be aware that most of these theories have been derived from real business research. You will be able to question perceived wisdom in organisations which is not based on real evidence - and be in a position to put forward alternative solutions.

The focus of the MBA is on application and relating theory and best practice to the context in which you operate. This is achieved through the study materials, case studies and online seminars where students are required to discuss application of ideas from their reading, and in exams and assignments which all require you to show how theories and ideas apply. Application is also a major theme of the dissertation, which enables you to study in depth and conduct research - normally in your own organisation - on a real management issue.
