PARTNERSHIP is no longer a "secure reward" for professionals making their way to the top of the profession, according to a leading academic.

Professor Laura Empson of the Cass Business School added that several factors are making the future of partnerships for large accountancy firms uncertain.

In an article for Accountancy Age published today, she writes: "What is more, the difficulties of maintaining collective decision-making in large and complex organisations, together with young accountantsâ?? demand for a better work-life balance, means that the future of partnership in the largest accounting firms is looking decidedly uncertain."

Empson added that partnership has remained "resilient" as an organisational form and that people will still continue to join, provided they can feel pride in their organisations and take care over who they make partners.
